The opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Boating Safety Officer to be part of the Operations and Compliance team within Roads & Maritime Services. The position reports to the Principal Manager (Sydney) and provides high level advice on marine and environmental legislation regarding recreational and commercial boating in NSW, specifically Sydney Harbour.

The Senior Boating Safety Officer is responsible for delivering local boating safety operational compliance campaigns, leading marine pollution responses and supporting incident and accident response options on Sydney Harbour. The position is responsible for monitoring performance outcomes of a team of Boating Safety Officers who are focused on effective on-water patrols of Sydney Harbour and the inspection of recreational and commercial vessels and moorings.

We are looking for a Senior Boating Safety Officer who can provide staff with professional leadership and who has demonstrable experience in facilitating mediation and conflict resolution with a range of stakeholders to ensure an equitable and safe use of NSW waterways.

Essential Requirements
  • Possession or demonstrated capacity to obtain within 12 months a Master < 24m Near Coastal qualification or equivalent (Near Coastal not required for inland positions) and engineering qualification. 
  • A Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training combined with a demonstrated ability to plan and conduct both formal and on-the-job training and assessments.
  • Possession of a current motor vehicle driver’s licence and a Certificate IV in Government Investigations, or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of boating safety initiatives in NSW and the marine and environmental legislation relating to recreational and commercial boating and experience in boating safety, on-water inspections and incident management resolution.
  • Demonstrated advanced small vessel handling skills.
