The Position…

The City Economy & Activation Group has four business areas being Corporate Affairs & Strategic Marketing, Events Melbourne. Business and Tourism and International and Civic Services. The Group drives activation and business outcomes to position Melbourne as a world class city in local, national and international markets. The group works closely with a wide range of stakeholders including ratepayers, business, retail, city visitors, tourists, community and cultural bodies, major sporting bodies and government departments.


The Business and Tourism branch creates strategies, programs and initiatives that drive maximum economic development and social benefits for the city. The role of business development and tourism are inherently connected as one sector is complemented by the other and positions Melbourne as an international business, tourist, retail and hospitality destination.

The Manager Business and Tourism provides leadership and direction in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives across multiple business functions to build capability in key economic sectors in accordance with Council’s plan. The position leads the development of key strategic partnerships, advocates the City of Melbourne’s economic development and tourism agenda to all tiers of government and maximises revenue opportunities.


The position requires a strategic thinker with proven leadership in achieving outcomes within a complex and political business environment with the ability to build and maintain strong and effective relationships borne of trust and credibility. In building capability the position needs to educate and coach for change at all levels.
